YLE Cassette and Disc Sales - a door to fairytales and stories for children as well as adults, true stories, educational programmes, experiences

YLE Export Department's Cassette and Disc Sales produces video and audio recordings of Yleisradio's television and radio programmes for a variety of purposes. The widest selection of titles, numbering around 1,200, is available for libraries, institutions, and for educational purposes, but private persons also have access to them at the libraries that have taken them onto their shelves. Already four out of five Finns are able to borrow these recordings from their local public library.

YLE programmes around the world

Schools and libraries serving expatriate Finns living around the world are among the institutions that acquire YLE recordings. The only private individuals who may buy titles from the library/institutional collection listed here are Finns living abroad and the associations that represent them. The majority of the tapes are in Finnish or with Finnish subtitles (in the case of TV programmes in Swedish), but there are also a few in Swedish or with Swedish subtitles. There are no videos with English subtitles in the selection, but subtitles could be added to some of the items on request.

The prices of the tapes in this library and institutional collection are higher than the prices of the more widespread commercial cassettes and discs, as only a limited number are produced owing to the restricted copyright agreements. In the case of purchases by associations rather than individuals, a mandatory copyright fee is levied on each cassette and disc sold, resulting in these video and audio tapes having broader rights of use than commercial recordings. They may be publicly played or screened at such events where an admission fee is not charged, but they may not be resold, nor may copies of them be made.

Recordings for personal use

An increasing number of YLE recordings may be obtained for personal use or as a gift from the YLE Shop (www.yle.fi/yleshop), which sells all of the YLE cassettes and discs intended for home use. Finns living abroad can buy these items directly from the YLE Shops in Helsinki and Tampere when they are in the country, or they can be ordered by mail. The cassettes and discs for personal use are also sold in the larger supermarkets and in video stores around the country.
