Born in Helsinki, Finland, Johanna Nuutinen took up gymnastics at the age of six but soon turned to ballet instead. She has been a pupil at the Finnish National Opera Ballet School since 1992 and is now in her second year of professional training. Meanwhile she is also attending evening school with a view to taking her matriculation examination in a year’s time.
Johanna competed in the Finnish heats for the Eurovision Young Dancers competition two years ago and was among the finalists in the Nordic ballet competition for young dancers at Mora in Sweden in both 1999 and 2000. She has been assigned leading and minor parts in Ballet School productions and performances such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake by the Finnish National Ballet.
Johanna has also studied dance on international summer courses, and in 1998 the Bartholi International Ballet Seminar made sure she would return to Denmark the following year by awarding her a scholarship for another course. In 1999 she went to Edinburgh to study with the Russian Ballet Society. Last summer she attended two courses, one at St. Cyprien in France and the other arranged by Unesco and the International Theatre Institute in Austria.
In Johanna’s opinion, it takes more than faultless technique to make a memorable performance; the dancer must not be afraid to reveal her sensitive qualities on stage as well, and to demonstrate her powers of expression. “There’s nothing to lose in giving it all you’ve got,” she says.
