MARIANNE ROUHIAINEN
(b. 1960)
choreographer, dancer, pedagogue

Marianne Rouhiainen studied dance in London, New York, Paris, Stockholm, and at the Theatre Academy of Finland in Helsinki. She has worked as a freelance dancer and guest choreographer at the Finnish National Opera Ballet School, dance schools all over Finland and elsewhere.

For the past few years Marianne has been working on crossover productions. Among her most recent achievements have been the multicultural Ocean of Cultures, a project launched during Helsinki’s year as European City of Culture in 2000, and StillLeben commissioned by the Mänttä Art Festival, a major survey of Finnish contemporary art in summer 2001.

Marianne Rouhiainen has done choreographies both long and short. Her distinctive, visually dynamic and moving works have been performed in a number of European countries, and many of them have won prizes in Finnish competitions.

Angels Fly Low was choreographed specifically for Johanna Nuutinen in early 2001 with a view to international competitions. It draws on the physical traits and characteristics of the dancer to produce a work that is thematically harmonious and rich in expression.
