460 Postal Workers Face Unpaid Leave

The postal services company Itella is beginning layoff talks with about 460 employees at its Vantaa logistics centre near Helsinki.

The company blames the unpaid leave on a lower volume of packages being sent, as well as weaker overall demand due to the economic slowdown.

The layoffs, which are expected to last up to two months per employee, will be staggered over a year beginning this April.

In 2007, the state-owned Itella Group had some 25,000 employees. The former Finland Post changed its name that year to Itella, while still using the Posti brand in Finland.
