Advance Voting Ends in Presidential Election

Advance voting in the first round of the Presidential Election ended on Tuesday evening. Around 1.2 million of those eligible cast their vote in advance.

This represents 29.6% of the electorate. Advance voting enthusiasm is less than six years ago when 33.4% of all voters cast their ballot before the actual poll.

Women voters have been the most active with almost 693,000 casting their vote in advance compared to around 509 000 men.

Among those voting in advance were over 29,000 Finns living abroad. This number is almost exactly the same as those voting in the first round of the previous Presidential election six years ago.

According to an opinion poll commissioned by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, President Tarja Halonen could face a second round in the upcoming Presidential elections. The poll gives Halonen 51 percent support, but the margin of error could push her vote below 50 percent.
