Finland’s Environmental Administration is warning that the extremely warm weather is likely to increase the amount of algae found all over the country, especially in the Gulf of Finland. An upsurge in small coastal accumulations of flora can be expected as well.

The general amount of algae around Finnish sea areas is slightly higher than average. Large beds of algal flora have been found especially east of the coast of Helsinki. Some floral beds are found floating in the southern Bay of Bothnia and south of the Åland Islands.

Although lakes and water surfaces are exceptionally warm, inland waters haven’t seen an increase in algae since last week. Of the 277 locations observed, only 40 lakes were registered having blue-green algae. The amount is less than a week ago. However, a change in wind conditions might affect current readings.
