Deadly mistake in mushroom book

A recently-published mycological guide book contains a mistake that could prove fatal to novice mushroom-pickers. A table in the book mixes up the deadly ’Destroying Angel’ mushrooms with ordinary—and perfectly edible—button mushrooms.

The book’s co-author Jarkko Korhonen took responsibility for the mistake and apologised via the Finnish Mycological Society’s Facebook page. He explained that the incorrect table was spotted by a reader.

Ingesting the highly toxic Destroying Angel mushroom could lead to liver damage and death. The mistake will be corrected by a sticker in unsold copies of the  Suomalainen Sienikirja, or ’Finnish Mushroom book’.

Those that have already purchased the book can return it to the point of purchase.

The matter was first reported in the Central Finland daily Keskisuomalainen.
