Deadly weekend on nation's roads

At least seven people have died in traffic accidents this weekend.

Two were killed on a Saturday afternoon crash on Route 23 in Virrat in Pirkanmaa. A motorist trying to pass other vehicles in wet conditions struck another car head-on. Three people were injured.

A similar collision took place on Saturday morning about 100 kilometres further north in Lapua. Again, a miscalculated overtaking led to a head-on crash. Both drivers died and another person was hurt.

A bit further west, near Vaasa, one person was killed on Friday evening when a car and van collided in Pyhäjärvi, north Ostrobothnia.

In Ylöjärvi, also in Pirkanmaa near Tampere, a 70-year-old woman died on Saturday afternoon after being struck by a van. She was crossing a street, but not on a crosswalk.

A middle-aged man who drove off a road in Tervo, North Savo, on Friday, died the following day in a Kuopio hospital.

On Sunday, there were crashes in Rovaniemi, Pihtipudas, Vimpeli and Pirkkala. Authorities also reported a a 10km-queue of vehicles waiting to cross into Russia at the Vaalimaa border checkpoint.
