EU approves Tampere airport’s Ryanair contract

The EU commission has ruled that the contract between Tampere-Pirkkala airport and budget airline Ryanair cannot be considered state aid. The commission reached the verdict after an investigation prompted by a complaint from a competitor.

Ryanair and Finavia, the state-oned company that operates the budget terminal at Tampere-Pirkkala through its subsidiary Airpro, had come to an agreement to try and implement a ’low-cost strategy’ at the airport.

The commission found that the contract reflects market conditions, and is one a privately-owned company would have accepted.

Ryanair is the only airline to use the budget terminal, Terminal 2, which was a cargo hangar until it was converted for passenger use in 2002.

The story was first reported by the Tampere daily Aamulehti.
