South Sudan declared independence on July 9, after southerners voted almost unanimously in favour of breaking away from the north in a January referendum.

A number of countries, including the US, the UK and Egypt recognised South Sudan on the same day. At that time, the European Union issued a statement welcoming the newly independent country to the family of nations.

The UN has accepted South Sudan as its 193th member on July 14.
