Finnish Decision on Nordstream Pipeline in November
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has confirmed the government will decide on a licence for the construction of the Nordstream pipeline through Finland’s economic zone on November, 5th. A separate environmental permit decision will be made by the West Finland Environmental centre by the end of the year.
Finland has requested additional data on various route alternatives for the pipeline and for further details of hazardous substances that could be released from seabed sediments during construction.
Environmental data submitted by Russia last week has failed to satisfy Finnish officials.
Denmark has already approved the pipeline leaving both Sweden and Finland to decide.
The 1220 kilometer Nordstream pipeline is to run from Vyborg to Greifswald in Germany. Two German energy companies E.On Ruhrgas and BASF-Wintershall have joined forces with Russia’s Gazprom for the project which will pass through the territorial waters of five states.
Poland and the Baltic states have criticized the project.
