Finnish News Agency Hit By Cyber Attacks

The Finnish News Agency, STT is the latest target in a spate of cyber attacks against Finnish web sites. Enhanced security levels, though, prevented a collapse of the agency's site.

The attack on the Finnish News Agency's site took place on Wednesday night but did not cause any major disruption. The agency had upgraded its security systems to prevent attacks similar to those that hit other Finnish companies earlier this week.

STT Information Systems Manager Jukka Salomaa said the attack on the agency's site was not similar to that on the Finnish Broadcasting Company's website and was less intense. During the attack the agency's site slowed down but did not crash. No details are available on the motive or perpetrators of the attack.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company's web pages were targeted by a concerted attack on Monday and Tuesday. Two other major web sites, those of the telecommunications service provider Eniro, and the Suomi24 portal also reported similar disruptions.
