Finnish Observers to Gaza

A group of Finnish observers have started their work in the Palestinian area on the border between Gaza and Egypt.

A total of five border and police experts are taking part in the EU border and customs inspection operation. Finland is also supporting the operation with a voluntary contribution of 100,000 euros.

Some 70 observers from the EU started their work in the operation last Friday. Its aim to supervise the actions of police officers at border crossing points and assist in the development frontier duties to meet with international standards.

The operation is part of wider EU support for the Middle East peace process. The Union gives annually about 500 million euros to the Palestinian areas, of which half comes from the Commission's budget and the rest from aid given by individual member states.
