Finnish peacekeepers under fire in Afghanistan

Finnish soldiers exchanged fire with insurgents in northern Afghanistan on Thursday. None of the peacekeepers were wounded in the action in which they returned fire in self-defence.

“Every now and them something happens like it did today,” said colonel Joni Lindeman, adding that northern Afghanistan is still relatively peaceful.

The joint Finnish-Swedish patrol was travelling from Darzab to Sheberghan when they were attacked. The skirmish lasted ten minutes.

Some 200 Finnish soldiers are taking part in the NATO-led ISAF operation in north-west Afghanistan, where they serve in the Swedish-led Mazar-i-Sharif Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
