The main opposition Finns Party plans to challenge the government in Parliament over its plans to shut six military bases. Its MPs lashed out at the government on Thursday over the issue.

The Finns Party's parliamentary group decided on Thursday afternoon to stage an interpellation over the decisions announced a day earlier.

On Wednesday the Council of State said that four army bases and two air force schools would be closed. Meanwhile eight current regiments will be consolidated into four.

The chair of the Defence Committee, Jussi Niinistö of the Finns Party, accused Defence Minister and Swedish People's Party chair Stefan Wallin of defending the Swedish-speaking minority's interests by preserving the Swedish-language Dragsvik garrison in Tammisaari. Niinistö argued that it could have been merged with the Upinniemi naval base in nearby Kirkkonummi. This, he claimed, could have saved the North Karelian Brigade in eastern Finland.

Wallin denied the allegation, saying that it was improper to bring linguistic issues into the defence debate.
