Fire fighters say the blaze, which broke out early Saturday, was difficult to bring under control despite the presence of twenty fire-fighting units at the scene. Several explosions were heard during the blaze due probably to gas tanks in the plant.

The plant is located close to rail tracks and services between Riihimäki and Lahti were disrupted for a time as it was feared part of the building’s structure could collapse on to the adjacent tracks.

Damage from the fire is put at over ten million euros. The plant, which belongs to the French Weber Saint-Gobain concern, specializes in the production of façade renders and external wall thermal insulation systems. It commenced operations a few years ago.
