Foreign media: Finland's new pro-EU president

CNN reports that Sauli Niinistö is pro-Europe at a time when a debt crisis threatens the bloc. The US cable news channel also notes that Niinistö ushered Finland into the euro when he was finance minister.

The Guardian meanwhile writes that the Finnish president’s duties are mainly ceremonial, though the president does take the lead on non-EU matters of foreign policy while serving as a "brand ambassador" of Finland overseas.

Swedish public broadcaster SVT said Niinistö got his revenge for losing to Tarja Halonen six years ago. It also noted that this was an unprecedented win for the conservative arm of Finnish politics—not only is this the first time Finland will have a conservative head of state in five decades, but also the first time in the country’s history that the National Coalition Party is sitting on the presidency as well as the prime minister’s post.
