Foreigners in Finland love being their own boss

Immigrant entrepreneurs are the fastest-growing segment of small-business owners in southern Finland's Uusimaa region. A fresh study indicates that foreigners in the capital city area are more enthusiastic to start their own business than the general population

The Uusimaa Regional Council says foreign-born entrepreneurs have started 900 companies in the past three years. Half of these firms operate in Helsinki. Most of the newly-sprouted businesses are in the restaurant sector and are entirely family-run.

The most typical foreign entrepreneur in Uusimaa is a restaurant owner of Asian descent, though the hotel and retail sectors also draw entrepreneurs of immigrant background.

Russians and Estonians represent the majority of workers in foreign-owned small business.
