According to the Financial Times, Finland's troubles "seem minor compared with those that face other European states".

The London-based Financial Times published a five-page special report on Finland on Wednesday, which describes the Finns as "rich, happy and good at austerity".

The FT points out that Finland is one of the few EU countries to retain its triple-A credit rating.

It says Finland's biggest challenges includes "a population that is ageing more rapidly than any country apart from Japan and a faltering industrial base".

The paper notes that because of strict fiscal discipline at home, Finland has become a "natural ally of Germany in Europe's austerity versus growth debate".

Those interviewed by the paper include the minister for EU affairs, Alexander Stubb of the conservative National Coalition Party, and opposition leader Timo Soini of the eurosceptic Finns Party.
