Haavisto sees good even in defeat

Defeated Green League candidate Pekka Haavisto said Sunday evening that two new phenomena were seen during the presidential election. Social media played a major role and young people got involved.

"If this brings the young and their interest in social affairs to the fore, then indeed something has been accomplished in Finnish society," said Haavisto

Pekka Haavisto conceded defeat in his bid for the presidency when about 80% of the vote had been counted and it was evident that Niinistö had polled over 60%.

Despite a final spurt in Haavisto's campaign, support simply did not grow enough to bring him a victory. Even so, Haavisto said he was satisfied with the count.

"From the summer's five percent it is a good rise. Over a million people gave me their backing."

Haavisto said that he will continue his duties as an MP.

"I am a Finnish member of Parliament. It is a valued job," Haavisto stated.

As for a future run for the presidency, Haavisto was unwilling to take a stand on Sunday evening.
