Most of the country is enjoying sunny weather on Saturday, says Yle meteorologist Toni Hellinen.

But he predicts that the summer’s hottest temperatures may be recorded on Sunday or Monday.

The heat will bring thundershowers, with the first ones arriving in the southwest on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday, forecasts the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Thunderstorms can be expected on Sunday across southern and central parts of Finland. The likelihood of thunderstorms is higher still in the late afternoon and evening on Sunday. Hellinen recommends keeping an eye on weather warnings this weekend (they are available in English here).

Statistically, Finland experiences most thunderstorms in July. During the traditional holiday month, the land areas are hit by an average of 60,000 lightning strikes, which accounts for nearly half of the whole year’s figures.
