Heating Restored to Vantaa

Heating services were restored to residents of the city of Vantaa Wednesday morning after a district heating pipeline burst, causing an outage Tuesday evening. At worst, almost the entire city was without heat - around 190,000 people.

Several thousand people had to make it through the night without heat, and with temperatures plummeting to more than -20 degrees Celsius.

The power company, Vantaan Energia says it had a team working throughtout the night to repair the damage, but the work was hampered by the freezing temperatures and copious amounts of stem billowing from the ruptured pipe.

The delivery of heating services was interrupted when the main pipe for the district heating system burst in the Myyrmäki section of town.

On Wednesday morning, some homes were still without heating in Pähkinärinne, and only limited supplies were being delivered to Martinlaakso, Kaivoksela, Myyrmäki and Hämeenkylä.

Water damage and rust are being blamed for the burst pipe.
