Helsinki stock market tumbles

The Helsinki Stock Exchange fell steeply on Thursday, with shares plunging in value by some 5.1 percent on average. Prices on the Helsinki market have been in decline for the past nine days.

Share prices have been falling in Helsinki since the start of year, but the drop has been exceptionally steep in recent weeks due to worries over debt crises and economic recession.

Market nervousness was more clearly displayed in Finland than elsewhere in Europe. Still, European stock markets also took a hit, with the London main stock index falling by 3 percent and Frankfurt's DAX index sliding 3.6 percent.
