Hiroshima victims remembered in Helsinki event
Former Finnish president Tarja Halonen will speak on Monday at a Helsinki event devoted to honouring the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atom bombings during World War II.
Monday marks the international memorial day for US bombings of the two Japanese cities—the only use of nuclear weapons in history.
The Helsinki event will be held at the open-air amphitheatre behind the Opera House at 9pm. It is organised by the Peace Union of Finland, Swedish Peace Friends in Helsinki and the Parish Union of Helsinki.
Speeches by former president Halonen and the Lutheran Bishop of Turku, Kaarlo Kalliala, as well as music by the duo Matt & Mary, will feature in the programme. At the end, candle-lit lanterns will be set afloat in the Töölö Bay in accordance with the Japanese custom.
