Int’l media: Bulgaria’s suicide bomber had Finnish roots

Bulgarian and Israeli news outlets are reporting that the suicide bomber that carried out an attack on a bus in Bulgaria on Wednesday was a Swedish national with Finnish and Algerian roots.

The Times of Israel and Bulgarian national broadcaster BNT named Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish citizen and former detainee at Guantanamo Bay, as the suicide bomber.

The Swedish Security Service Säpo, however, denies that Ghezali was the perpetrator.

"We can’t give any more information on the investigation," Säpo spokesman Mark Vadas told the Swedish news agency TT.

Ghezali was held at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba from 2002 to 2004 on suspicion of being an al-Qaeda agent but was released for lack of evidence.

Thirty-three year old Ghezali was born in Stockholm to a Finnish mother and Algerian father.

Five Israelis were killed in the attack in addition to the Bulgarian bus driver and the bomber.
