Introducing Ranzo, Finland’s polar bear cub
More than 32,000 name suggestions poured into Ranua Zoo in Lapland for the cub born last November.
Ranzo is concocted from the words Ranua and zoo, linking the cub to his birthplace.
Anne Hamari, who came up with the moniker, has been awarded a prize weekend at the zoo.
Other popular suggestions included Sulo (Grace), Lumi (Snow) and Pyry (Blizzard).
The cub’s mother, Venus, also provided some intergalactic sources of inspiration with suggestions such as Mars, Jupiter and Pluto.
Poplar boys' names Onni (Hope), Otto and Urho (Brave) were also proposed for the baby ursine mammal.
Though quite the celebrity already, the young cub is set to boost his fame further with his very own postage stamp.
Ranzo is still living with Venus, but by the time he turns 18 months it will be time for him to make a new home in another European zoo.
