Karpela Wants Big Sports on National TV

Culture Minister Tanja Karpela says she wants to keep nationally significant sports events on TV networks that are accessible to all Finns.

She said a list of such events should be drafted. Karpela says it would include, for example, the Olympic games and world championships.

A debate on sports broadcasting rights has been sparked by pay-TV gaining exclusive rights to show the Finnish soccer team's World Cup qualifying matches.

Fears exist that more and more significant sports events will move over to pay-TV channels and be only accessible to their own customers
