Lindén Urges Internet TV Viewers to Pay Licence Fee

Minister of Communications Suvi Lindén urged people to pay their television licence fees even if they only plan on watching via the Internet or mobile phone.

Lindén made an appearance in Tampere at the government's roadshow promoting the beginning of the digital broadcast age. The promotional tour hits seven cities this week.

It's predicted that tens of thousands of households will opt not to renew their license fees once the nation's analogue transmissions end.

"If those people decide that they don't want to watch television, that's their decision, and we have to respect their decision making," Lindén told YLE News. "But if you are going to watch television through the Internet or through your mobile phone, then you should pay your television fee."

Lindén says she is satisfied with the rate at which households are switching over to the digital broadcasting age.

"Three out of four households now are in digital readiness, and I think that is a very good achievement at this moment," she said.
