Nokia's Windows-based smartphone Lumia 800 hit the stores in Finland on Wednesday. Major retailers in Helsinki city centre opened for business at the stroke of midnight for customers lining up for the new mobile.

The most enthusiastic Nokia fans had queued up to eight hours to get their hands on the hyped smartphone.

The Lumia 800 is Nokia's first Windows-based smartphone to go on sale in Finland. The model was released on several other European markets in November 2011.

Nokia's latest quarterly results announced last week showed a drop in smartphone sales, which put the Finnish company far behind its main rival Apple.
