Lutheran Church apologises to Sami people

The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church has apologised to the Lappish Sami community for anthropological research carried out in the 1930’s.

Bishop Samuel Salmi of the Oulu Diocese said the church was ashamed for ethnic research which entailed the opening of Sami graves.



Salmi said the apology was intended to raise awareness of the church’s wrongdoing to the Sami people.
