Medal hopes in Match Race sailing

Finland's Match Race team skippered by Silja Lehtinen took first place in Saturday's event at the London Olympics, winning a place in the quarter-finals.

The team of Silja Lehtinen, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff met a challenge from their French rivals, maintaining an even lead of around seven seconds throughout the race.

As of Saturday, the Finnish Match Race team was in fifth place in the overall standings.

Also on Saturday, Sari Multala placed seventh in the Olympic women's sailing Laser Radial race 10.  However, at 40 points behind the overall leader, Multala can no longer place among the top three in the finals. Finland's Mattias Lindfors came in 33rd in Saturday's Laser class final.

There were disappointments for Finns in the stadium and on the shooting range, as well.

Minna Nikkanen's pole vault result of 425 was not enough to gain her a place in the finals, and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist trap shooter Satu Mäkelä-Nummela placed seventh in Saturday's qualifying round, failing to secure a spot among the six finalists.
