More dogs abandoned this summer

Dog owners have usually been quite concerned for their lost pets—but this summer some have left their canine companions in the wild and never looked back, say animal rescue workers.

Finland is familiar with the phenomenon of owners abandoning cats in the summer months, but dogs have met with the same fate less frequently. This summer it’s different, says Outi Pahkala from the Julius pet hotel in Kajaani, north-eastern Finland.

The hotel, which also has a shelter for abandoned animals, keeps the lost pets for 15 days, after which the local animal welfare association tries to find them new homes.

In the past month, the hotel has received three dogs whose owners likely couldn’t handle them, says Pahkala.

“All of them were quite youthful dogs, a little mischievous. I think that people didn’t get along with them and so left them by the road,” she concludes.
