NATO said in a statement that claims Finnish co-operation is a threat are baseless. It went on to say that Finland is a long-standing and valued NATO partner, citing Finnish contributions to NATO missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo as helping to create stability.

The alliance also said that every country makes its own decisions about NATO independently, echoing Finnish Defence Minister Stefan Wallin's comments on Finland's policy-making process.

Wallin had emphasised his view that Finland will make its own independent evaluations and decisions about NATO.
