New guide to Finland’s ‘Everyman’s Right’ published on Wednesday

The Environment Ministry has published a guide to Finland’s Everyman’s Right, the provision that allows people in Finland to roam on others’ land so long as they do not damage property or disturb others.

The new guide will not bring in any changes, but will explain good practice and offer tips to potential ramblers on proper behaviour on land owned by other people and in wilderness areas.

“I have always considered Everyman’s Right to be a fine legal tradition, and as a minister I am not about to impose limits on it,” said Minister of the Environment Ville Niinistö.

Everyman's Right Day is celebrated each year on 9 September.
