Easter Season Affects Schedules, Opening Hours

Holy Week and the Easter holidays bring numerous changes to shop and office openings and public transport through April 17. Meanwhile authorities predict heavy highway traffic on Thursday and Monday, and urge holidaymakers to allow plenty of time to get their destinations.

Stores may remain open on Thursday until 9 pm and on Saturday until 6 pm. They are closed on Friday and Sunday. Small stores (less than 400 square metres) can open for up to four hours on Monday. Alko, the state-owned alcohol shops, close on Thursday at 8 pm and re-open on Tuesday. Banks closed on Thursday afternoon and re-open on Tuesday. Post offices shut at 6 pm on Thursday, also reopening on Tuesday. Helsinki's main post office is open on Monday from 10 am to 6 pm. Postal agents operating within groceries and other shops operate when those stores are open. Pharmacy opening hours vary, with nearby pharmacies taking turns opening on holidays. Long-haul buses run on normal schedules on Thursday, with the addition of supplementary departures that normally run on Friday. On Friday and Sunday they operate on holiday schedules, and on Saturday on normal timetables. There are slight changes to services on Monday and Tuesday. More information on long-distance travel available on the Matkahuolto website. Long-distance trains run Thursday using Friday timetables, while on Friday and Monday they follow Sunday schedules. Saturday and Sunday services operate as usual. On Tuesday, trains leave according to Monday schedules. For details check the VR State Railways online.
