Helsinki District Court has meted out tough sentences in Finland’s first human trafficking trial. All eight defendants -- an Estonian woman, five Estonian men and two Finnish men -- were given prison sentences.

The sentences, ranging from one to five years of imprisonment, were for aggravated human trafficking and pandering.

The Finnish-Estonian gang brought 15 women to Finland over a period of six months to work as prostitutes. One of the women was mentally retarded.

Police say that the operation was led by an Estonian who is serving time in a prison in Estonia, who had the help of two women. Estonian police are investigating their activities.
