The Espoo city council was expected to decide on Monday evening to back the extension of the Helsinki Metro along its south coast.

According to the proposal approved by the City's Board, the present Metro service would be extended from Ruoholahti in Helsinki to Matinkylä in Espoo.

A later extension would take the line to Kivenlahti. Trains would travel underground for the entire journey.

Initial estimates say the line would cost more than 500 million euros to build. Of that the state would pay 150 million, while Helsinki and Espoo would have to pay about 200 million euros each.

The idea of a western branch of the Metro has been discussed for 20 to 30 years.
