The Finnish Refugee Council launched on Thursday a new course on multi-cultural mediation. Participants will receive training to resolve neighbourhood conflicts between people of different backgrounds.

The intention of the course is to train multi-cultural mediators to help resolve neighbourhood disputes.

According to Terhi Joensuu, project coordinator from the Refugee Council, some of the programme's mediators are immigrants who say this type of training has been needed for quite some time.

Course members take part in mediation classes and receive proficiency in intervening in disputes and crime matters.

Initially, the mediators will be tried out in a few neighbourhoods in the capital region and Turku. This autumn, the course had more applicants than places available, and new courses are already being planned for the spring.
