Police deported 1,400 foreigners from Finland last year. More than 900 of them were sent back to their home countries because they did not have a residence permit.

Most of the deportees left peacefully, but more than 400 had to be escorted home by police. When this happens, the deportee is turned over to local authorities and Finnish officials do not follow up on the case.

Police data shows that no one was returned to Afghanistan or Somalia. One person returned to Iraq voluntarily, and eight were sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 200 were returned to Russia, while almost 300 Bulgarians were deported.

By far the largest number of people were returned to Sweden. Most of these would-be immigrants were not Swedish, but had arrived in Sweden from non-EU countries. They were returned across the border because EU legislation states that immigrants may only apply for asylum in the country of their arrival.
