Two human rights organisations have charged that Finland is one of a number of European countries harbouring persons suspected of committing genocide in Rwanda.

According to the organisations REDRESS and the International Federation for Human Rights, some 40 persons suspected of genocide in Rwanda have been given refuge in Europe.

The activist groups say Finland and the other countries have an obligation to investigate the claims and bring the suspects to justice. In 1994 the Hutus slaughtered 800,000 Tutsis over a six-week period.

Other countries accused of harbouring genocide suspects are France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway.
