A BBC Panorama documentary has uncovered an illegal European wide dog fighting ring extending to Finland.

The documentary screened on YLE TV 2 on Thursday evening showed a dog fight being staged at an undisclosed location in Finland. A BBC journalist infiltrated a European wide dog fighting ring for over a year.

According to the National Bureau of Investigation, this is the first time a case of dog fighting has been reported in Finland. The BBC told the police of its findings in April.

Dog fighting is illegal in Finland and is classed as animal cruelty. The dogs, mainly pit bull terriers, are trained specifically to fight. Often the defeated dog dies in the ring while the other sustains horrific injuries.

BBC journalists started their investigations after a Northern Ireland soccer star Gerard Cavlan was convicted of arranging dog fights.
