The ban on drinking tap water in the town of Nokia is being lifted in stages, starting Wednesday. A massive clean-up operation has been underway since the clean water supply was contaminated by sewage last November.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, all areas south of the Turku freeway, as well as the neighbourhoods of Haavisto and Harjuniitty, will be declared safe-drinking areas.
The rest of the area under ban, Koskenmäki and Kartano, will be declared safe next Monday morning.
Chlorine levels in the water will still be high throughout the rest of February. Although it is safe to drink, it may cause irritation to people who are sensitive to chlorine. Chlorine levels will be reduced gradually according to recommendations by the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute.
The distribution of clean water continues in Nokia.
