The Finnish Navy is marking its 90th anniversary on Wednesday with a series of events in Turku. The day began with a ceremonial flag raising, a field devotional service and a parade review. During the day, the public can visit several naval ships including a mine carrier, a missile boat and a landing craft at the Forum Marium maritime museum. July 9th is annually observed as Navy Day, in memory of the Battle of Svensksund (Ruotsinsalmi), a naval engagement fought in the Gulf of Finland in 1790 in which Swedish naval forces defeated the Russian coastal fleet. At the time, Finland was a part of the Kingdom of Sweden. YLE
