Finland's Association for the Deaf is trying to raise the profile of sign language as a theme in the upcoming municipal elections.

The Association feels that sign language is not on equal footing with Finland's other official languages. They want candidates in local elections to address the issue of providing more language-learning opportunities for both deaf children and their hearing parents.

In particular, they want all hearing-impaired children to have the opportunity to naturally develop sign language as their native language.

Both Finnish and Swedish-Finnish sign languages are used in Finland.
