Nokia Siemens Networks Cuts 559 jobs in Finland
Nokia Siemens Networks, the joint mobile telephone network company of Nokia and the German Siemens, has announced plans to cut 559 employees in Finland. Co-determination talks that began in November conclude today.
Nokia Siemens announced already last year that it hopes to reduce as many as 750 jobs. At the same time it was confirmed that the Karaportti factory in Espoo would be closed down. Karaportti has manufactured microwave radios as well as radio network, and central systems products. Most of the jobs will be shed in the Helsinki region, but a few dozen jobs will be cut in other areas as well.
The announcement brings to an end the need to cut staff, which resulted from the merger of the network operations of Nokia and Siemens. The total need for job reductions as of the launch of the new company will be 1,100 in Finland. Initially the estimate was for a need to cut as many as 1,700 jobs.
After the job cuts, 7,500 people will remain at work for Nokia Siemens Networks in Finland.
