Property maintenance companies have hired 3000 new employees since the start of the year, half of them in newly-created jobs. Cleaning and maintenance services have struggled with a shortage of workers for a number of years.
The managing director of the association representing companies in the sector, Pia Gramén, estimates that 10,000 people will be hired for cleaning and maintenance services this year. Taking into consideration personnel turnover, that will probably mean around five thousand new jobs.
Most of those being hired are cleaners. The business sector also includes other types of property maintenance and security. Over 90% of employees work fulltime.
Also, tax breaks for private individuals hiring cleaners have brightened the employment picture. However, the greatest need for new workers is at offices and commercial premises.
Altogether, private cleaning and maintenance services employ around 50,000 people in Finland.
