Finland’s National Agency for Medicines has given a green light to officials testing a swine flu vaccination on children.

The Vaccine Research Center at the University of Tampere is set to begin its study on the French-manufactured vaccine on Tuesday. Some 450 to 500 children in Finland under the age of 18 are to take part. The youngest participants are just six months old. Studies on adults are being carried out in France.

Finland's National Advisory Board on Health Care Ethics had approved the study earlier.

Preparations for the study began immediately following approval, according to Ilona Kulmala, a researcher at the Vaccine Research Center.

”Now our clinics can really begin recruiting people for the study. In the beginning, we will call people who have contacted us and expressed their desire to participate," Kulmala said.

The vaccinations are expected to arrive at most clinics by Tuesday. Fifteen clinics are participating in the study.
