The Emergency Response Centre confirmed that ambulance workers responding to an emergency at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport drove to the wrong site on Wednesday. An Austrian Airlines jet made an emergency landing at the airport because of an ill passenger. The 90-year-old woman died at the airport.
Officials at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport say they had given the correct address to emergency workers.
Emergency Response Centre head of operations Tuomo Katajisto said he cannot yet rule out a mistake by emergency personnel.
The plane, en route from Tokyo to Vienna, landed just before 3 pm. It took about half an hour after the plane landed before an ambulance arrived.
Airport director Juha-Pekka Pystynen told YLE on Wednesday evening that an emergency landing due to illness is extremely rare. He says the airport was informed of the sick passenger in advance, and passed this information on to the Emergency Response Centre.
Authorities continue to investigate the series of events.
