Nokia Loses Most Favoured Employer Status

Mobile phone giant Nokia is no longer the most popular employer for young graduates. Top of the most popular employers list for several years, Nokia has dropped out of the top three most favoured firms for both engineers and economists
Young economists place Nokia fourth on their list of most desirable employers. For recently graduated engineers, the company has dropped to sixth place. Only IT students prefer to sign up with Nokia.
“Nokia’s competitors and other Finnish companies such as Finnair have managed to brand themselves better on the labour market in the eyes of students,” says Tommi Ora from the Helsinki School of Economics.
Firms such as Kone and Fazer now top of the list of more desirable employers. Among engineers, Wärtsilä, VTT stand alongside lift manufacturer Kone.
Corporate image and company attitudes toward students rather than economic performance are prime factors in forming graduates’ attitudes. One example is cash-strapped Finnair, which is a favourite among young economists.
