Helsinki City Transport expects to be able to open the Metro station serving Helsinki’s Central Railway Station already in mid-January.

A massive flood on Sunday caused by a ruptured water main forced the closure of the station.

The surge of water damaged the lifts and escalators of the station, and the City of Helsinki originally feared that it would take up to six months before the station would be open to passengers.

Damage to the escalators proved to be less severe than feared, but the lifts will stay out of service for a longer time.

At present, metro stations are driving past the station without stopping.
